Block Two, Discussion C (Spring 2014)

Present Me offers educators an opportunity to showcase their instructional and communication skills. What two (2) things did you have to consider when providing narration to your Tell'em in 10 presentation?

  1. While recording, I needed to consider exactly what I would say. I know whenever I have to record myself, I forget a line or ramble. I wrote out a rough outline, and then began recording. The second thing I considered was how my face looked on camera. I make facial expressions often and the camera catches them all. I started over several times because I did not like how I looked on several of the filming takes.

    1. *Correction*- These are the things I considered in anticipation of recording. However, I cannot access Present.me for some unknown reason.

    2. Before narrating my Tell'em in 10 presentation, I had to consider exactly what I wanted to say. I wrote out a draft to use so I would not ramble and lose what I wanted to say. Trying to communicate with myself in such an "up close and personal" style makes me very nervous and I am sure that shows through on the video. I also had to consider the speed in which I covered the material. If this had been in the classroom, it would have had more of a natural conversational flow between the students and myself. This style of instruction makes you aware of the pace you use when you are the only one talking. With younger students, a slower pace is always going to allow them the opportunity to absorb all of this new information.

  2. The first think I considered was the fact that I do not have an audience for the narration. So I chose do narrate my presentation in a classroom and assume the chairs to be my audience. This gave me the natural feel of a classroom instruction even though I was talking to myself.
I also had to consider ways I can actively engage learners using such a presentation since it is challenging to narrate Mathematics.
I ensured I had worked out all the questions in my presentation for refrence

  3. When I first looked at the assignment I viewed it as very good practice for National Board certification. Also, knowing what you will say during the presentation is always a good idea. As teacher we know the way we present or the in-depth we get into with different classes will not be the same, but knowing the points that are a must to cover with your students will keep you on task. For Board certification you have to video yourself teaching so many times and then send those videos off to a master teacher to be evaluated. It would be interesting if you were able to send a Present Me instead of a Tripod video.

  4. I think there are many things to consider when creating a narrative for a tell em in 10. The first thing to consider is internet connection. This might not be an obvious thing to consider but it caused some problems for me. I did my present me at home with my home internet in the middle of the day when no one else was on it and the internet kept cutting out and losing connection. This caused me to have to restart my present me multiple times. I don't know if maybe my internet was just having a bad day or if it is the program but I know internet in schools is usually subpar so I think this could be a hard task to complete if you were in your classroom.
Another thing to consider when narrating the presentation is what you are going to say. In my first presentation I found myself relying on the slides too much and then not looking at the camera when I was not reading off the slides. I know it is important to not read directly off the slides so I tried to tell stories and keep my students engaged however when doing this I caught myself looking away from the camera. Keeping an upbeat voice is important as well when narrating a presentation like this. Luckily I naturally turn on my cheery teacher/receptionist voice as soon as I know I am being recorded so it is easy for me but I can see how it would be possible to get distracted by what you are wanting to say and forget to use an upbeat tone of voice.

  5. Two things that need to be considered while using Present Me is the speed at which I covered the materials and also what I was going to say.
I am having a hard time to correctly and acurately cover what I wrote. I have to think about my class. Making sure that I do not cover the material too fast for my 2nd grade class to grasp. I do not want to go slow that they become bored after wa while.
I have written out 2 drafts for my Present Me presentation and I still feel that it is incorrect. I feel that I am not covering the material and that it does not sound personal. I have tried multiple times. To not become more frustrated, I have waited until oday to try to record. Maybe after some time away from the assignment, I will get it right. Hopefuly TSU internet connection does not fail me:)

  6. When providing narration to my Tell'em in 10 presentation, the two things that I have considered: first, knowing what to say. I prepared myself to what should I say but when I started recording my presentation I forgot some thing. So, I kept restarting my record many times. Second thing I considered was looking to my face and how it looked on the camera (I hate seeing my face on the camera) so I kept looking how my face and my expression are looked.

  7. When I was presenting (Tell’em in 10 presentation) there where many thing in my mind to consider since I’m international student. To explain, the things in fact are the skills which I have to focus on such as pronouncing, grammar, pacing, tone, clarity, and moving smoothly through my presentation. Therefore, I had to write a note and made some practice to know the points which I have to cover. This was the first thing that caused me to restart my presentation many times.
Another thing to consider when narrating the presentation is how I can make my presentation interesting by being natural, smiling, and keeping my voice upbeat. I believe that is important since I do not want my class become bored.

  8. When providing narration for Tell’em in 10 presentations, the two things I have to consider are:
    • Create a personalized script. The point of my presentation is to illustrate and expand on a particular lesson intended for the audience. The audience needs to visualize the content as well as understanding my audible explanations. I am not an expert at improvising, so it is helpful for me to write down the major points of my presentation- in at least an outline format. Having a script will allow me to stay ahead of my students (audience) and make easy transitions to the next bulletin.
    • Be attentive to the design. A presentation in mathematics takes a lot of numerical explanations. The process to obtaining the correct answer follows a step-by-step acute design. It is important that the audience can differentiate each process, and understand the chronological order to solving the problem. I must be considerate of the body text, when and when not to utilize bold, italic, and decorative fonts. I have to align the text correctly and avoid clutter within the slides, yet make it eye-catching enough to add visual appeal for a 5th grade class.

  9. Two things that need to be considered while using Present Me are how the absence of an audience impacts your script and how unfeeling and overdependent on a narrative you are without interaction with your students. I always marvel at how you can teach the exact same content the exact same way but have very different discussions generated from student interaction. The absence of this interaction can make you feel like a talking head--just talking to hear yourself. It simulates some, but not nearly all of a classroom teaching exercise.

  11. Considering quality, relevant information when doing the tell em 10 portion of the assignment was more complicated than I anticipated. I ran into the problem of having too much information, which made it difficult for me to decide what parts of the presentation needed to go and/or stay.
The Present Me portion of the assignment had a few areas for me to consider. Each of the areas played off of each other such as feeling comfortable on camera, while talking, and thinking about what I was trying to relay. This was not an easy task at all for me.

  12. The two main things that I have to consider when creating my Presentme.com presentation was though the assignment was presented as, “an opportunity to showcase instructional and communication skills,” I found that the showcase of my communication skills to not be that outstanding! Though I believed my content was strong, my communication in front of the camera by watching myself talk was weak and required two things: preparation in the form of a script and rehearsal and many run through’s in front of the camera

I found myself trying to do “dry runs” without a script and a very short time realized that my delivery had to be entirely scripted and I even used cue cards to help keep me on track with my presentation. The utilization of a tool like Presentme.com requires a whole new level to teaching that I hadn't previously considered and reminded me of an undergraduate class I took in linguistics whereby I had to have a conversation with the person that was taped and later transcribed. Upon the review of the transcript it became apparent that the fluidity of the conversation and the use of improper grammar, stammering, saying “umm” were all things that we really don't take into consideration when just talking. With Presentme.com you are not just talking. In advance of the presentation, the use of a tool like this not only requires prerequisite mastery of content and preparation but adds a new layer of rehearsal and presentation that I had not previously considered.

  13. Providing narration for my Tell'em in 10 PowerPoint presentation required me to consider both the script and pace in order to successfully create a PresentMe document.
I knew exactly what I wanted to say, I just didn't know how to say it. This assignment provided me the opportunity to witness my strengths and weaknesses in which I need to prepare for the future. I can be such as swift talker at times, so the pace in which I needed to present my information was one of the most challenging aspects about this assignment. I must have recorded over thirty times due to this issue.
As a result of being educated on PresentMe, I will use this tool to perfect my narration abilities in hopes to improve over the course of the years.

  14. As I began my narration for my Tell'em in 10 presentation, I took the time to plan and organize what I wanted to say about each slide to give a better understanding to the students. I wanted to make sure that I provided a clear understanding for students during the learning process. Second, I wanted to make sure that I clearly identified the learning objectives and define all vocabulary that the students knew exactly what the would be learning. This type of presentation was beneficial for me because I will be able to practice my public speaking skills and make corrections as needed.

  15. The two things that I considered when providing narration to my Tell’em in 10 presentation were my voice and transition between slides. Below is a detailed explanation of each:

    1. Voice - I wanted to make sure I was speaking clearly throughout the presentation. It was not easy to multi-task with speaking, clicking on the next slide, and following a short script. In addition to speaking clearly, I wanted to make sure I did not have a monotone voice, adding inflections throughout the presentation was necessary.

    2. Transition between slides: I was concerned with the transitional flow between slides. I wanted to ensure that students were seeing the connections between the information from one slide to the next and as a whole. Also, I wanted to ensure that the narration was not choppy.

    Thanks!

  16. The first thing I had to consider when making my present me video was my surrounding or anything that could hamper my recording. As I started recording the video, I realized I had to do it over and over again. Until I had my surrounding secured and prepared for the presentation effectively, then my presentation went on smoothly.
Another thing I had to consider apart from being clear, concise and having a script to prepare for what I had to say, I also noticed I had to have a stable and reliable internet connection. I tried recording the video numerous times in the library but the internet connection there was slow. Once I had finished recording and I had to review and submit, but the unstable nature of the internet connection wouldn’t allow me. So I took into consideration my internet connection and that helped me complete the assignment.

  17. Before I started on my Tell'em in 10 presentation, I was nervous in the beginning and then I started talking fluently. I had to consider exactly what I wanted to say. I noticed a draft to use so I would not ramble and lose what I wanted to say.
I think that this program helps dramatically in facilitating the learning process for teachers and communicate with their students at any time to deliver the information they need to easily.

I must say that I didn't have any trouble using the Present Me software as I thought it was neat and would serve as a great educational tool for educators to use. The first thing I considered while narrating through my presentation was to make sure I have straight forward eye contact with the camera, as I tend to look directly at the computer which appears to the audience that I am looking away and to monitor my pacing. The second thing I considered was my surroundings. I wanted to make sure it was free of most of the clutter so that it would not serve as a distraction to others whom are viewing the presentation.
